National Library of Serbia is the oldest cultural institution in Serbia, founded in 1832.
As a national, central library and referral center of Serbia, it has a great number of activities, which originate from its main functions that are acquisition, cataloguing, conservation and making available the whole publishers’ and press production in Serbia (legal deposit); provision of CIP records for materials published in Serbia; information and other services on the current and retrospective Serbian bibliographies; National Agency for: ISBN, ISSN, ISMN, ISAN, DOI; inter-library cooperation; Centre of the Virtual Library of Serbia, comprising the Union Catalogue of Serbian libraries; the Center for Scientific Information- KoBSON; developing and maintaining the Digital Library of Serbia.
It holds all types of library material, with the total number of about 5.500.000 units.
Its Digital Library (www.digitalna.nb.rs) consists of more than 1.000.000 digital files, available in about 100 different collections. National Library of Serbia has also developed specialized digital library Veliki rat (www.velikirat.nb.rs), devoted to the collections from the World War One, with the specialized services to researchers and teachers.
Projects and partnerships
With the employees’ expertise and its digitised cultural heritage, NLS has participated in many eminent international projects such as International Children Digital Library, A Roma Journey, EMBARK, and currently is involved in projects Europeana Collectiones 1914-1918 and CENDARI.
It has been one of the first members of The European Library and data provider to Europeana since its founding, and an active member of organisations: IFLA, CNDL, CENL, CERL, OCLC, ABADOS, ELAD, LIBER, UNESCO etc.
