National funding in Germany

Information on the Cataloguing and Digitisation Programme

Institution

DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft / German Research Foundation).

Description/Main requirements

This funding programme targets primarily scientific libraries and archives, as well as libraries and archives of scientific research institutions in Germany. The funding objective is the cataloguing and/or digitisation of prominent collections with nationwide significance for researchers. Indexing and digitisation can be combined. However, it is also possible to submit a proposal solely for indexing or digitisation (where metadata is available).

This programme is primarily directed at research information and service facilities in Germany that house the collections they wish to index/digitise.

Upcoming Funding Opportunity “Pilot Phases for Digitising Specific Material Types”

Institution

DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft / German Research Foundation).

Description/Main requirements

For some types of material, the methodological, technical and organisational frameworks for large-scale digitisation measures are to be clarified in pilot phases funded by the DFG. The aim is to set up the necessary infrastructures, establish exemplary workflows, define standards and, in close consultation with the benefiting scientific disciplines, to establish criteria for selecting and prioritising the materials to be digitized.

Pilot phases are currently being funded for the following types of material:

  • Digitisation of archival material (anticipated conclusion at the end of 2014).
  • Digitisation of historic newspapers (anticipated conclusion in early 2015).
  • Digitisation of medieval manuscripts (anticipated conclusion at the end of 2015).

Once concluded, the results of these pilot phases will be evaluated by the responsible statutory bodies of the DFG and will form the basis for the development of framework conditions for appropriate funding programmes. Until the pilot phases have been concluded, no applications will be accepted for digitising the respective groups of materials.

Upcoming Funding Opportunity “Digitising Copyright-protected Materials”

Institution

DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemein-schaft / German Research Foundation).

Description/Main requirements

Based on the initial pilot projects, models for digitising copyright-protected literature and other scientifically relevant materials that are subject to proprietary rights are to be tried out over the coming years. In preparation for these measures, it is intended to conduct a workshop in 2014 involving researchers, representatives of publishers and technical associations, as well as infrastructure experts. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the scientific requirement for appropriate measures and on the basis of this to deliberate possible approaches for appropriate funding opportunities. It is not anticipated that there will be any digitisation measures on a larger scale in this area.

eHumanities

Institution

BMBF (Bundes-ministerium für Bildung und Forschung / The Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

Description/Main requirements

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) intends to promote research and development projects in the field of eHumanities.

What is needed are projects in which the humanities and social sciences develop new approaches to research in collaboration with computer science-related studies in their disciplines.

Digitization should be only one part of the project. It is explicitly stated that “projects that deal exclusively with mass digitization (scans and transcriptions)” will not be supported.

Digitisation projects in the context of the German Digital Library (DDB-Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek)

Institution

BKM (Bundesbeauftragter für Kultur und Medien).

Description/Main requirements

In 2013 there was funding available for specific digitization projects in the context of the German Digital Library (DDB-Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek). Perhaps there will be upcoming funding opportunities in the future.
