Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center

PSNCPoznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) is state funded ICT research and development centre located in Poznań, Poland. In the context of digitisation PSNC offers a broad range of tools, resources, services and expertise, especially those related to digitisation workflow management, online availability, long term preservation and (meta)data aggregation/enrichment services. Our expertise is a combination of commercial deployments of our tools as well as R&D activities conducted in the framework of national and European projects. More information can be found at http://dl.psnc.pl/

In the context of digitisation, several tools and resources has been developed by PSNC:

  • dLab – digitisation workflow management platform which improves digitisation projects in several ways: better organization of digitisation activities (roles, assignments, execution order), extensive monitoring, automated use of customer’s and external tools, integration with long term preservation tools. More information can be found at http://dlab.psnc.pl/dlab
  • dLibra – software tool for building digital libraries, repositories and archives. The main focus is to assure online availability of object’s presentation version. Full-text search, collections and directories hierarchy, planned digital objects, keyword indices, self-archiving, groups of objects, LDAP, SSO, OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE, METS, RIS, MARC21, Z39.50, BibTeX are just examples of dLibra package characteristics in the context of features and interoperability. Moreover, one deployment of dLibra is able to manage several thematic portals as well as institutional repositories, lowering the maintenance cost to minimum. There are over 70 deployments of dLibra system across Poland and several in Europe providing access to over 1.3M of digital objects (state on 04.2013). More information can be found at http://dlibra.psnc.pl/dlibra
  • dMuseion – software tool for building digital museums with main focus on visual art holdings and their online availability. Thematic collections, exhibitions, sets of objects, LDAP, SSO, OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE, METS, inventory systems support are just few examples of dMuseion features. One dMuseion system can handle multiple digital museums websites or thematic portals, making the maintenance cost low. Currently dMuseion is used by the National Museum in Warsaw. More information can be found at http://dmuseion.psnc.pl/dmuseion
  • dArceo – long term preservation system focused on textual, graphical and audiovisual content. This software package uses well known standards and formats (e.g. METS, PREMIS) to make the preserved content accessible over a long period of time. The approach for long term preservation in dArceo is based on migration (OAIS model). Additional mechanism, such as automated conversion, can be used to perform batch processing of preserved data. dArceo is used in production environment by Digital Repository of Scientific Institutes (Polish Academy of Sciences). More information can be found at http://darceo.psnc.pl/darceo
  • Virtual Transcription Laboratory (VTL) – it is a set of tools which make it possible to create fully searchable digital text from scanned documents. Its broad range of features enables its users to: create training sets for Tesseract OCR engine, perform OCR and correct it, collaborate on transcription projects as well as use advanced fonts to transcribe historical documents. VTL has been used by several transcription projects on a service-based manner. More information can be found at http://wlt.synat.pcss.pl/
  • Clepsydra – it is a flexible and scalable system for aggregation, processing and provisioning of data from heterogeneous sources. It was designed and developed to be a basis for services focused on aggregation and enrichment of (meta)data describing on-line collections of cultural heritage digital objects from Polish memory institutions. The first production deployment of this system is the PIONIER Network Digital Libraries Federation. More information can be found at http://fbc.pionier.net.pl/pro/clepsydra/
  • Polish historical full text resources – a set of 4693 scanned pages with full text transcription has been published on PSNC Digital Libraries Team website. These resources can be an input for verification and testing of digitisation tools, such as OCR engines, geometrical correction tools as well as transcription systems.
